Short answer: spring (March–May) and fall (September–November) are ideal in Lake County. But you can lay sod year-round in Central Florida if you adjust for the season. Here's the breakdown.
Best windows by grass type
St. Augustine
- Best: April–June and September–October.
- OK with care: July–August (water 2x/day for two full weeks).
- Riskier: December–February (slow rooting).
Zoysia
- Best: Late spring through summer (May–August). Heat helps it knit fast.
- Avoid: Cool months — Zoysia goes semi-dormant and barely roots.
Bahia
- Best: April–September.
- Bahia roots aggressively in warm soil — quickest to establish of the three.
Why timing matters
Sod needs warm soil + consistent moisture to root. Below 65°F soil, rooting slows to a crawl. Above 90°F with no irrigation, seams dry and shrink before they bond.
Winter installs in Florida — yes, but
Mild Lake County winters mean you can sod in December–February. Just know rooting takes 6–8 weeks instead of 2–3, and you should avoid heavy traffic on the lawn until spring.
Skip these weeks
- Right before a forecasted cold snap (below 45°F at night).
- The week before you leave town for a vacation (new sod needs daily eyes on it).
- Mid-rainy-season afternoons — too wet to grade properly.
