Sod Care

Sod vs Seed in Florida: Which Actually Works?

Sodding versus seeding a lawn in Central Florida — what works, what doesn't, and why most Lake County lawns shouldn't be seeded.

May 26, 2026 · 4 min read

In most of Florida, the sod-vs-seed debate has a clear winner: sod. And it's not even close for the most common Lake County grass — St. Augustine — which can't be seeded at all.

Can you seed St. Augustine grass?

No. St. Augustine doesn't produce viable seed commercially. It can only be installed as sod, plugs, or sprigs. If a product claims to be "St. Augustine seed," it's mislabeled or a different species.

What can you seed in Florida?

  • Bahia — yes, very commonly seeded on large lots and acreage.
  • Bermuda — yes, but mostly for athletic fields and golf, not home lawns.
  • Centipede — yes, but slow and uncompetitive vs weeds.
  • Zoysia — technically yes, but slow and risky; sod is standard.

Sod pros

  • Instant lawn — done in a day.
  • No weed competition during establishment.
  • Works for St. Augustine and Zoysia.
  • Erosion control on slopes from day one.

Seed pros

  • Cheaper per square foot (Bahia seed at scale).
  • Better for very large lots (1+ acre).

The honest cost comparison

  • St. Augustine sod installed: ~$0.85–$1.40/sq ft.
  • Bahia sod installed: ~$0.60–$1.00/sq ft.
  • Bahia seed (DIY): ~$0.10–$0.20/sq ft + 60–90 days of weed-fighting and watering before you have a real lawn.

Our recommendation for Lake County

Suburban yards: sod (St. Augustine or Zoysia). Acreage/rural: Bahia seed is a legitimate budget option if you're patient. Get a free comparison quote.
